A Student's English Experiences

Some of our students have lived abroad for two weeks, one year, or even more and improved their English skills. We have asked some of them to write about their experiences abroad and in our school system. We hope this will give the reader a better idea of English education at our school.
Students

I'm Daisuke Minami, a senior high school student in our school, and have been in Rikkyo since elementary school. It's been such a wonderful time growing up in the Rikkyo system. I would like to let you know what I like about Rikkyo Ikebukuro Junior and Senior High School.

I think that the school has extraordinary teachers with passion and concern for the students. They dedicate themselves to teaching and taking care of us so that we, the students, can rely on them and feel comfortable being around them. You often see a lot of students talking with the teachers in the faculty room and spending time with them in club activities.
Especially, our school has focused on English education. There are five native-English speakers in our school who provide us with high-quality classes. Our school also has summer camp programs in which you can go to the U.S., Canada, or the U.K. for about two weeks to study English. The students can also take English tests such as the TOEIC, TOEFL, and GTEC throughout the year to improve and check their English skills. My favorite subject has been English ever since I started learning it in junior high school. I am really happy that I have been able to take advantage of this opportunity to study English in such a wonderful environment. My interest in English has turned into an interest in foreign cultures too, and I went to an American high school to study their culture as well as the English language.

During my time in America, what I learned in the classes, especially ones with the native teachers, helped me a lot to understand their English and get accustomed to the surroundings there. I often talked with them in English during breaks and after school, improving my English little by little. I have also achieved one of my goals of passing the Eiken (STEP) test first grade thanks to all the teachers.

Rikkyo is a missionary school, and stands on the beliefs and values of Christianity. We go to church once a week and listen to the chaplain's sermons and hear him deliver meaningful messages to us. I'm also a member of the choir, and we serve and sing for the church on some occasions such as Easter and Christmas. I really enjoy working with the choir and I am thinking of joining the choir in our university in the future.

There are many more things I like about our school and would like to tell you. I hope that you have gotten to know a little bit more about Rikkyo through my story and have become more interested in it. Thank you for allowing me to let you know more about our school.
